Anthropic tried to delete one leak and faceplanted on GitHub

Thousands of GitHub repos got vaporized because Anthropic went repo-hunting like a Roomba with a flamethrower.

Here’s the vibe: some of Anthropic’s allegedly leaked model/source code popped up, and the company (or whoever was acting for them) swung a DMCA takedown bat at GitHub trying to erase it from the internet.

And instead of cleanly pulling the one sketchy file, the process reportedly carpet-bombed a huge pile of unrelated repositories. Regular devs woke up to projects gone, links dead, and that special kind of rage you only feel when a corporation breaks your stuff and then acts like it’s weather.

GitHub is built on forks, mirrors, shared code, and “hey I fixed that bug” drive-bys. So when an AI company panics about IP and starts yanking threads, the sweater doesn’t just unravel — it takes your entire drawer with it.

Anthropic’s whole brand is “responsible AI,” which is adorable considering this episode reads like “responsible” means “we will accidentally delete your work and call it an unfortunate edge case.”

Translation

“We had to protect our intellectual property.”

Translation

“We pushed the big red button because investors hate the words ‘leak’ more than they hate collateral damage.”

Translation

“Your open-source labor is a rounding error next to our valuation.”

Meanwhile, the people actually keeping the internet running are stuck rebuilding, re-uploading, filing appeals, and praying their repo wasn’t hosting something important like… their job interview project.

The Bottom Line

When AI companies say “safety,” they mean their safety — your code is just acceptable shrapnel.

TLDR

Anthropic chased a leaked code repo with a DMCA nuke and somehow deleted a bunch of innocent GitHub projects like collateral damage was a feature.
