PSLF still takes 120 payments now it also wants your receipts yearly

Ten years. 120 payments. And starting July 1, 2026, they want you to prove you’re still a Good Little Public Servant every single year like it’s a parole check-in.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) still dangles the same carrot: work a qualifying public service job, make 120 qualifying monthly payments, and the rest of your federal student loans get wiped.

But for new borrowers after July 1, 2026, employer verification gets tighter and the system pushes annual certification harder. Not “when you remember.” Not “when HR finally answers an email.” Every year, on schedule, with paperwork that always breaks at 11:59pm.

Translation

the government realized the cheapest way to “save money” isn’t lowering your interest rate — it’s denying forgiveness because you uploaded the wrong PDF or your employer’s EIN got typed with one extra space.

They’ll call it “strengthening program integrity” and “reducing errors.”

Translation

if your job is teaching, nursing, social work, firefighting, or keeping your county from collapsing into Mad Max, congratulations — you’re now also part-time compliance staff.

Meanwhile, the people who designed this verification maze will never miss a bonus because a forms portal timed out. Your hospital CFO isn’t getting told, “Sorry, your payments don’t count because we can’t verify you were employed in March 2029.”

The Number

120 — the same magic payment count, except now every one of those payments gets to live under the threat of “Actually, no ❤️” if your annual certification hiccups.

If you’re counting on PSLF to make your life math work — rent, childcare, groceries — the risk isn’t that you won’t do the service. The risk is that bureaucracy will do what it does best: lose the plot, then blame you for it.

The Bottom Line

PSLF didn’t get stricter to protect taxpayers — it got stricter to protect the government from having to keep its promise.

TLDR

PSLF still promises forgiveness after 120 payments, but after July 1, 2026 you’ll have to re-prove your public service job yearly or get “denied on a technicality” like it’s a sport.
