NVIDIA Just Dropped $4B to Own the Internet Inside Your Data Center

$4,000,000,000 — NVIDIA just spent that to buy the plumbing, not the toilet.

Reportedly, Jensen Huang’s GPU empire wired $2B into Lumentum and $2B into Coherent, two optical networking companies that make the lasers/fiber stuff that actually moves data around inside AI data centers.

Because turns out owning the brain (NVIDIA chips) isn’t enough if the nervous system is congested and your trillion-parameter model is sitting there buffering like it’s 2009 YouTube.

This is vertical integration by checkbook. Not “we built it ourselves,” but “here’s a bag of cash, congrats, you’re family now.”

And yeah, Lumentum and Coherent aren’t exactly household names because nobody writes fanfiction about fiber optics. But in the AI arms race, the bottleneck isn’t always compute — it’s moving insane amounts of data between racks without turning your shiny GPU cluster into the world’s most expensive space heater.

Meanwhile, every other chip company and cloud provider gets to play “catch up” in a game where NVIDIA keeps changing the rules mid-match, then charging admission.

If this works, NVIDIA doesn’t just win on performance. They win on control. And control means pricing power, which means your employer’s “AI initiative” gets more expensive, your SaaS bill inflates, and somehow your company still tells you there’s no budget for raises.
