Meta Built 4 AI Chips Because Nvidia’s Invoice Hit Like Rent

Meta just dropped four in-house AI chips like it’s starting a street gang, and the target is Nvidia’s profit margin.

They unveiled a whole custom lineup, including something called MTIA 300, because apparently paying Nvidia to think for you is getting as expensive as feeding Mark Zuckerberg’s VR hobby.

Meta says these chips will handle “billions of AI-driven requests” across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Translation: every time your aunt posts Minion memes, an energy-hungry math demon wakes up and invoices someone.

This isn’t about “making apps smarter.” It’s about who owns the silicon when the entire internet turns into one giant autocomplete box. Nvidia has been the arms dealer of the AI boom, and Meta is tired of paying cartel prices for the GPUs that power it.

And sure, they’ll say it’s about “efficiency” and “cost reduction.” Translation: they want the margin back, and they want it in a form that Wall Street can sniff from space.

Meanwhile, the real bill is electricity. AI doesn’t run on vibes—it runs on power plants. Every “personalized experience” is basically a tiny coal-fired prayer circle, except the prayer is “please buy these shoes” and the coal is your utility rate.

If Meta can make its own chips, it can crank more AI for cheaper, flood its platforms with even more algorithmic sludge, and brag about being “less dependent” while becoming more dependent on the grid than a crypto miner with anxiety.
