Trump Wants a 'Save America' Voting Law Because He Misses Losing

“Save America Act” is the new name for “I still can’t process 2020” but with more paperwork.

Donald Trump popped up on YouTube declaring a “war on fraud” and pitching a “Save America Act” to block undocumented immigrants and “unpermitted persons” from voting, because apparently the republic is one expired library card away from Mad Max.

Here’s the thing they never say out loud: noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal. Like, not “wink wink” illegal. Actual illegal. But “already illegal” doesn’t raise money, doesn’t juice turnout, and doesn’t let you frame your opponents as cheaters who need to be stopped by Any Means Necessary.

The “unpermitted persons” line is doing a lot of shady work too, because it’s vague enough to mean whatever the next press conference needs it to mean. Today it’s undocumented immigrants. Tomorrow it’s students, renters, people who moved, people with names the DMV misspelled, and anyone who can’t take three hours off work to prove they exist.

Meanwhile, the same politicians screaming “cheating” will fight you over funding election offices, staffing polling places, and making voting less of a Hunger Games side quest.
