Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL at the end of Kansas City’s playoff elimination and already had surgery, which is a very polite way of saying the league’s final boss got nerfed by biology.

The Chiefs have spent the last half-decade acting like the rest of the AFC is just background actors in a Patrick Mahomes biopic. Now the camera pans to his knee and it’s like: oh right, this sport is a car crash with branding.

Kansas City will do the usual “he’ll be back stronger” tour.

And if he’s not? The entire Chiefs ecosystem gets real human, real fast. The offensive line suddenly matters. The play-calling stops being Andy Reid doodling touchdown plays on a napkin.
