Donald Trump just nominated Dr. Erica Schwartz to run the CDC — which sounds like a boring HR email until you remember the CDC is basically America’s immune system with a press secretary.

The CDC director isn’t a “health nerd” job. It’s a power chair. They steer pandemic readiness, public health guidance, and how aggressively the government treats everything from outbreaks to drug policy to what “risk” even means.

Because “guidance” turns into policy fast. Your workplace uses it to decide whether you’re “essential” (translation: disposable), your school district uses it to decide whether your kid learns fractions or just watches YouTube in a Chromebook coma, and insurers use it to decide what they’ll cover while raising your premium anyway.
