70% of young Americans think democracy’s cooked and rent agrees

70% of young Americans say U.S. democracy is “struggling.” That’s not a poll, that’s a group chat after someone posts their rent increase.

Harvard’s latest Youth Poll basically confirms what every 22-year-old knows in their bones: the institutions feel like a haunted house, and the only thing still working is the “Pay Now” button.

And it’s not just vibes. 55% say they fear financial instability. More than half the next generation is walking around like the economy is a Jenga tower built out of DoorDash receipts and unpaid internships.

Translation

they’re not “disengaged,” they’re exhausted. It’s hard to passionately defend “democracy” when your paycheck disappears into a landlord’s Roth IRA and your healthcare plan is just “don’t get sick, king.”

Politicians will respond the only way they know how: by blaming TikTok, promising “kitchen table solutions,” and then sprinting back to their donors like it’s the last helicopter out of Saigon.

Translation

“We hear you” means “please stop making eye contact with the money pipeline.”

This is how you get the next wave of elections and protests powered by two things: institutional disgust and rent stress. Not ideology. Not party. Just the primal urge to not be financially waterboarded until age 74.

Meanwhile, the people running everything will keep acting shocked that young voters aren’t inspired by another 83-year-old millionaire explaining how to budget.

The Bottom Line

When 55% fear going broke and 70% think democracy’s failing, the real “radicalization” is just math.

TLDR

Harvard polled young Americans and they basically said “democracy feels broken and my bank account is in hospice,” so expect elections/protests fueled by rent rage, not hope.
