OpenAI’s hardware boss dipped when the Pentagon showed up

Nothing says “building AI for humanity” like watching a top OpenAI hardware exec hit the eject button the second the Pentagon walks into the room.

TechCrunch says Caitlin Kalinowski — a senior hardware leader at OpenAI — resigned after the company’s defense partnership vibes got a little too real. And by “vibes,” I mean “your org chart now has a camouflage section.”

This is the classic Silicon Valley speedrun: start with lofty blog posts about making the world better, end with a government contract and a smile you can hear in the invoice. OpenAI gets money, influence, and the kind of “strategic importance” that turns internal ethics memos into decorative coasters.

OpenAI will frame it as “working with government stakeholders to ensure safe, responsible deployment.”

And Kalinowski? This reads like an internal “I did not leave normal jobs to become Tony Stark’s subcontractor for the War Department” moment. Because hardware isn’t vibes-only. Hardware is supply chains, manufacturing, and physical products that go places. Some of those places have names like “classified” and “don’t ask.”

Meanwhile, the rest of tech is pretending this is new. Google had its Project Maven freakout. Microsoft sells cloud to everyone with a pulse and a budget. Amazon would deliver a drone strike in two days with Prime if the SLA was right.
