Amazon Bought a Satellite Company to Get Inside Your iPhone’s Sky Texts

Amazon is buying Globalstar, which is like Jeff Bezos going “nice emergency satellite feature you got there, Apple… be a shame if someone owned the parking lot.”

Globalstar is the satellite network Apple uses for iPhone Emergency SOS and satellite messaging — the “your car flipped in the desert and you still text your mom” feature. Now Amazon wants the keys to that orbital plumbing while it builds Project Kuiper, its own Starlink-style constellation.

Apple gets “secure satellite connectivity” for iPhones.

Amazon gets spectrum, satellites, and a relationship with the company that prints money and turns it into titanium rectangles. Kuiper gets a fast lane to legitimacy without waiting for years of launches, permits, and the FAA doing its usual hobby of moving at the speed of a fax machine.

Globalstar gets a buyer with unlimited cash and a tolerance for losses that would make a casino therapist cry.

Meanwhile, every telecom company gets a new nightmare: your “cell service” is becoming an orbital turf war between Amazon, Apple, Elon’s Starlink, and whoever else wants to sell you connectivity like it’s a streaming bundle. The pitch is safety and coverage. The business is control.

You don’t need to care about satellites until the day you do — when you’re lost, flooded, or stuck on a highway praying the “No Service” icon doesn’t become a eulogy. And when this stuff gets consolidated, the price tag always shows up later, disguised as “premium features.”
