AI Companies Are Buying All the Memory Like It’s Toilet Paper 2020

Billion-dollar checks are getting written so AI companies can reserve… memory chips. Not “the future.” Not “the model.” RAM. The nerdiest hostage situation you’ve ever seen.

Everyone keeps yelling “AI boom” like the bottleneck is imagination. Nah. The bottleneck is boring physical crap: high-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced packaging, and the supply chain equivalent of one overworked barista making lattes for a stadium.

Big players are locking down components years in advance, because if you don’t, you get to watch your shiny GPU cluster sit there like a Ferrari on cinder blocks. GPUs are the easy part now. The hard part is the stuff that lets them actually move data fast enough to not embarrass you in front of your investors.

Companies will call this “securing strategic supply” and “building resilience.”

Meanwhile, the startups without war-chest funding are learning a beautiful lesson: your brilliant idea isn’t competing with other ideas. It’s competing with Jensen Huang’s client list and whatever government is currently speedrunning supply-chain geopolitics.

And yes, this trickles down to you, the innocent civilian. If memory and components get cornered, hardware prices go up, cloud costs go up, “AI features” get shoved into everything to justify price hikes, and your next laptop quietly costs $400 more because someone in a boardroom decided HBM is the new oil.
