Google Paid Sundar Pichai $692M to Keep a Straight Face

$692,000,000. For one guy. Google looked at Sundar Pichai and said “yes, that’s exactly what a human costs now.”

This was Pichai’s 2022 pay package, per filings TechCrunch flagged, and it hits like a piano falling off a skyscraper because it’s not “salary.” It’s mostly stock — the corporate equivalent of saying “we didn’t pay him, we just handed him a slice of the Death Star.”

Google will tell you this is “performance-based compensation” and “long-term incentives.”

Meanwhile the same industry that can casually drop nine figures on one executive has been preaching “efficiency” like it’s a religion. Layoffs, hiring freezes, “doing more with less,” free snacks disappearing like your childhood innocence.

And yeah, it’s Alphabet stock, not a wheelbarrow of cash. But stock is still money; it just comes with extra steps and fewer consequences. When it goes up, he gets richer. When it goes down, they’ll call it “a challenging macro environment” and fire some more people until the graph behaves.
