Big Tech built 3,000 AI data centers then “promised” not to nuke your bill

3,000 new U.S. data centers are going up, and NOW Big Tech is like “don’t worry babe, we’ll bring our own power.”

Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, OpenAI, and Elon’s xAI reportedly signed a federal pledge saying they’ll self-supply electricity for their AI data centers so consumers don’t get slapped with higher power bills.

Translation

they already ordered the industrial-strength electricity vacuum cleaner and only then remembered you can see your utility bill.

Data centers aren’t cute little server closets. They’re power-hungry metal boxes that run 24/7 so your boss can replace your writing with “AI-generated” sludge and your niece can generate 400 images of “Shrek as a crypto bro.” Same grid, same wires, same finite capacity.

So when these companies show up in your town with a megawatt appetite, utilities build new infrastructure, rates creep, and everyone gets to subsidize the compute party like it’s Bottle Service Night at the Club of Silicon Valley.

The Number

3,000 — that’s not “a few projects,” that’s a national electricity diet plan getting steamrolled by seven companies speedrunning Skynet.

And the pledge? It’s vibes-based. “Self-supply” can mean building generation, contracting for power, maybe tossing some money at nuclear or gas, maybe buying enough renewable credits to wallpaper the moon.

Translation

if the math doesn’t math later, they’ll hire a PR firm to explain why your higher bill is actually “grid modernization.”

Meanwhile you’ll get the joy of paying more to keep their GPUs warm while your own paycheck is doing the limp noodle in an inflation headlock.

The Bottom Line

They’re building the future on your electrical tab, then asking for a gold star because they promised to stop.

TLDR

Amazon/Google/Meta/Microsoft + friends started building ~3,000 AI data centers, then signed a pledge like “don’t worry, we won’t jack up your power bill” after the grid already started sweating.
