Congress wants to renew the spy program that can read you for free

Section 702 is back like a toxic ex — the one who “only checks your phone for your safety.”

This is the surveillance authority that lets the government vacuum up foreigners’ communications and, oopsie-daisy, also nab Americans’ messages when they show up in the pile. And yes, the FBI has historically searched that pile without a warrant, because apparently the Fourth Amendment is more of a vibe than a rule.

Now Republicans are doing their favorite sport: civil war with a flag on it. The privacy wing is screaming “warrant required,” the security wing is screaming “terrorists,” and the leadership wing is screaming “please stop making me choose between donors and the Constitution.”

The extra spicy part: the Trump world is pushing to extend it, while a bunch of Republicans are also convinced the same federal agencies are politically targeting them. Which is like handing your keys to the guy you think is stealing your catalytic converter because he promised to “keep it safe.”

Officials keep calling 702 “essential” and “targeted.”

Translation

we built a global fishing net and we’d like to keep the part where we can search the bycatch.

And yes, there are reforms floating around. More paperwork. More internal approvals. More stern emails.

Translation

they’re trying to make warrantless searching feel like artisanal, small-batch warrantless searching.

Meanwhile, normal people are supposed to trust institutions the way they trust airline Wi‑Fi and gas station sushi: sure, technically available, but you’re gonna regret it.

The Bottom Line

If you’re waiting for Congress to protect your privacy, start practicing your “I consent to monitoring” face in the mirror.

TLDR

They’re trying to renew Section 702 so the feds can keep searching the surveillance pile without a warrant, and the GOP is melting down because they want the power and also think the same agencies are coming for them.
