Amazon gave Anthropic $5B and Anthropic handed AWS a $100B leash

$5 billion in, $100 billion out. Amazon just invented the world’s most expensive gift card and Anthropic said “thank you daddy” while swiping it exclusively at AWS.

Amazon wrote Anthropic a $5B check, and Anthropic turned around and committed to spend roughly $100B on Amazon’s cloud over the next several years. If you’re confused, congrats: you still have a soul.

Anthropic gets runway, compute, and the ability to keep building Claude without their GPUs catching fire. Amazon gets what it actually wanted: a captive whale that will funnel a hilarious amount of cash into AWS like it’s paying protection money to the biggest guy in the prison yard.

And yes, this is the AI arms race in its purest form: cash buys compute, compute buys model progress, model progress buys hype, hype buys more cash, and then the bill comes due to the same three companies that own the servers. It’s less “open innovation” and more “oligopoly speedrun.”

Meanwhile, Amazon gets to brag about “supporting responsible AI” while quietly turning a frontier lab into an AWS endcap display.
