Google “Found” Android Freedom the Second Regulators Showed Up

Google is suddenly “open to change” how Android apps get distributed the same way your landlord is “open to repairs” when you mention a lawyer.

For years, Android’s pitch has been “it’s open,” while Google Play quietly acted like the bouncer, the bartender, and the guy charging $14 for water. Now that antitrust regulators worldwide are crawling up their balance sheet, Google is floating “major changes” to app distribution and billing.

This is about the tollbooth. App store fees and forced billing rules are the gas that keeps the machine running: developers pay, Google takes a cut, consumers pay again, and everyone pretends it’s for “security.” If regulators succeed, developers could use alternative app stores, different payment systems, and routes around Google’s take-rate — which is basically the financial equivalent of letting people leave the casino through a door that isn’t the gift shop.

Meanwhile, devs are out here doing layoffs, raising prices, and stapling “subscription” onto apps that used to cost $2 once, because the platform tax makes everything feel like it was priced by an airport.

And don’t get it twisted: Google won’t give up control; it’ll negotiate the shape of the handcuffs. Expect “choices” that are technically real but emotionally identical, like picking your own execution time slot.
