Big Tech found $600B for AI but not your job
$600 billion. That’s what Meta, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and the rest of the Silicon Valley priesthood are hyping for AI data centers by 2028—while they’re also speedrunning layoffs like it’s a quarterly sport.
Amazon alone is reportedly chopping 16,000 jobs this year, which is a fun way to say “we fired a small town so the servers can hallucinate faster.”
They’re calling it “investment” and “infrastructure,” like they’re building hospitals or railroads.
Translation
they’re building robot temples that eat electricity, guzzle water, and print money—then asking you to clap while your coworker gets walked out with a cardboard box and a Slack deactivation.
Meta’s out here preaching the gospel of “efficiency” while Zuck buys enough GPUs to recreate the sun indoors. Google and Microsoft are throwing cash at data centers because AI is the new oil, and they’re trying to own the refinery, the pipeline, and your résumé.
Translation
humans are “operating expenses,” servers are “strategic assets,” and your job is just a line item they delete so the stock does a little backflip.
The Number
16,000 — that’s how many Amazon jobs reportedly got Thanos-snapped this year, which works out to roughly one person sacrificed for every “AI-powered” feature nobody asked for.
Meanwhile… these same companies will absolutely tell you AI is here to “augment” workers, not replace them, with the same straight face Pepsi used for Kendall Jenner ending racism.
And before anyone says “but innovation,” remember: they’re not spending $600B to make your life easier. They’re spending $600B so they never have to pay humans to do anything ever again, including customer support, journalism, and whatever it is your manager pretends to do.
The Bottom Line
They’re building a future where the machines get raises, executives get bonuses, and you get a motivational email about “exciting changes.”
TLDR
Big Tech is flexing $600B for AI data centers by 2028 while Amazon allegedly dumps 16,000 jobs like humans are a deprecated feature.
